Start with the folder ITEMS YOU SHOULD EDIT or go to THIS_IS_THE_MAIN_COMP which shows the colour coding of layers, and subsequent pre-comps, as follows:

Green – Information

Red – Edit in this Composition (you can edit this directly here and it will affect the sequence globally)

Blue – Edit in Pre-Composition (double-click this layer until you reach a red layer)

Orange – Edit if you like (these don't need editing but you can change certain effects or attributes easily (i.e. fill colour))

Brown – No need to change (try not to make changes on these as they might affect the sequence)

11. My showreel is shorter than the "PUT YOUR SHOWREEL/PORTFOLIO HERE" composition of 3 minutes

OK, so you've placed your showreel within the PUT YOUR SHOWREEL/PORTFOLIO HERE composition and turned off the other layers in this composition. Go to the end of your showreel (select your showreel layer and hit 'o' to go to the outpoint, then hit 'n' to adjust the work area (to the outpoint), then go to Composition / Trim Comp to Work Area, which cuts the composition to the length of your showreel.

Go back to "02 Portfolio Section", select the (now shortened) layer PUT YOUR SHOWREEL/PORTFOLIO HERE and do the same (hit 'o' to go to the outpoint, then hit 'n' to adjust the work area to the outpoint, then go to Composition / Trim Comp to Work Area).

Now go to "PART 2 – SHOWREEL/PORTFOLIO and do the same again with the "02 Portfolio Section" layer, (hit 'o' to go to the outpoint, then hit 'n' to adjust the work area , then go to Composition / Trim Comp to Work Area.

Finally, back in THIS_IS_THE_MAIN_COMP make sure PART 1, PART 2 and PART 3 butt up against each other. An easy way to do this is to select layers PART 1, 2 and 3 (IN THAT ORDER) and right-click on one of them, 'Keyframe Assistant', 'Sequence Layers' (no overlap), and OK. Then select the PART 3 layer and, as above, hit 'o' for the outpoint, 'n' to crop the work area and go to Composition / Trim Comp to Work Area – to trim the entire main comp, ready for render.

Phew!

12. I don’t have a showreel

No worries. This piece works just as well without one! Simply remove PART 2 from THIS_IS_THE_MAIN_COMP, select the PART 1 layer and hit ‘o’ to go to the out point. Then select the PART 3 layer and hit ‘[‘ to start this comp from that spot. Hit ‘o’ again to go to the out point of PART 3 and then hit ‘n’ to adjust the work area, then go to Composition / Trim Comp to Work Area.

13. My showreel is longer than 3 minutes

There's some work to be done here, but not too much. Give me your showreel length and, for a flat fee of £35/$60 I can send you an amended After Effects file. Email [email protected]

14. I want to change some of the colours within the sequence

Simply look for the ORANGE layers within the sub-comps. These signify layers which can be easily changed (with fair knowledge of After Effects) without affecting the sequence.

15. I want to add music

I'd recommend doing all of the above first, if required – then put your music layer into the THIS_IS_THE_MAIN_COMP. Remember to reduce the levels during the showreel/portfolio section (if you already have audio here). Keyframe just before and after by hitting 'l' on your music layer and reducing the levels.
