View of River Cherwell from Magdalen Bridge, Oxford. Magdalen Bridge spans the divided stream of the River Cherwell just to the east of the City of Oxford, England, and next to Magdalen College. It connects the High Street to the west with The Plain, now a roundabout, to the east. The River Cherwell, particularly in north Oxfordshire is a major tributary of the River Thames in central England. It is also known as The High Bridge, Rainbow Bridge at Oxford University Parks, Oxford. It rises near Hellidon in Northamptonshire and flows south through Oxfordshire for 40 miles to meet the Thames at Oxford. It adds a significant discharge to the Thames when entering Oxford. The river gives its name to the Cherwell local government district.
