McNary Dam Columbia River spillway down stream. McNary Dam is a 1.4-mile long concrete gravity dam which spans the Columbia River. It joins Oregon Washington. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The dam provides for river navigation hydroelectric power generation recreation wildlife habitat and irrigation. Construction began in 1947 and was completed in 1954. There are two fish ladders for salmon and steelhead passage. The Washington side also has an 86 foot wide 683 foot long navigation lock that lifts boats an average of 75 feet. 14 turbines produce 70 mega watts of hydroelectric power each for a total capacity of 980 megawatts.
