Virginia Ellwood Manor plantation Stonewall Jackson 4K. Thomas Jonathan Stonewall Jackson was a Confederate general during the American Civil War. Confederate soldiers accidentally shot him at the Battle of Chancellorsville on May 2 1863. Military historians consider Jackson to be one of the most gifted tactical commanders in U.S. history. The general survived with the loss of an arm to amputation but died of complications from pneumonia eight days later. He stated; My religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. General Jackson amputated arm is buried at Ellwood Manor which was being used as a hospital.
