今回のクリエイターインタビューは、イギリス英語をお話になるminmoobaさん。
今回は特別に日本語と英語でインタビュー内容をご紹介します。
名前：minmooba
映像系クリエイター。京都市立芸大卒。関西育ち。映像プロダクション→外資系でインハウスデザイナー経てフリーランス。デザイン、イラスト、モーション、イギリス英語が武器。
As a freelance visual artist with an extensive video production background, minmooba was raised in Kyoto and Osaka, and educated at Kyoto City University of Arts. Worked for multiple video production studios before progressing to become an internal lead motion graphic designer at a global streaming service. Strengths in graphic design, illustration and animation, and also fluent in English.
どのようなことにAfter Effectsを使ってますか？
What do you use After Effects for?
動画の作業の時はかなりの確率で使います。
グラフィックスを手がけることが多いので、主にモーショングラフィックス、アニメーション作業の時に。その場合は、Photoshop/Illustratorと連携します。
また、加工や色補正などに使うこともあります。その場合はPremiere Proと連携します。
I generally use After Effects when working with video.
It’s usually for motion graphics and animation as I often work on graphics. In that case, I use Photoshop or Illustrator before moving onto After Effects.
For VFX or colour editing, I primarily use Premiere Pro.
After Effectsを使うきっかけは？
How did you get into After Effects?
大学の専攻がメディアアートだったので、その制作で使い始めました。始めはチュートリアルや本も読ずの完全フリースロー状態で始めたので、途方もなく効率の悪い作り方をしていました。
My major at university was media art, and I started using it for assignments and projects. I didn’t bother reading a book or watching tutorials, so my projects’ structure was very inefficient at first.
よく使うツールや機能を一つ教えてください。
Can you tell us a tool or feature that you use often?
バスのトリムが一番お世話になっている機能です。華やかさには欠けますが。標準機能だと割と手間がかかるのですが、この機能をワンクリックでつけられる、「trim-pack」というスクリプトがおすすめです。ちなみに、作者がモーションエレメンツの台湾合宿で訪問したときにお会いした、MixCodeというスタジオ所属の方だということを後で知り、驚きました。
他にも、色を調整するときには、Lumetri ColorやCC Tonerなど。
質感を調整するときには、マットチョーク、ラフエッジやミディアンなどを使うのが最近の個人的ブームです。
…って、全然ひとつじゃないですね。
It’s not that it does something visually amazing, but Trim Paths. One of my favourite scripts is trim-pack, which allows you to add Trim Paths animations with a single click. As doing this normally is a bit of a pain.
I visited a studio in Taiwan called MixCode as part of the meetup tour hosted by MotionElements. Afterwards I got to know that the script’s creator is from the studio and I’d met him then.
Also, I use Lumetri Color or CC Toner when I want to edit colours,
For editing textures, I like to use Matte Choker, Roughen Edges or Median recently.
It’s far from one thing, but anyway.
作業環境を見せてください。
Can you show us your working environment?
マシンはiMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) のいわゆる全部盛り（ ※ストレージ以外）です。
近々Windowsに切り替えようと思っています。
My main computer is a maxed out iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015, except for the storage. I’m planning to switch to Windows in the near future.
OSやソフトは英語環境にし、USキーボードを使用。
（英語のチュートリアルでまごつくことがなくなり、米Adobe本社の意図した配列のショートカットが使えるのでおすすめです。）
ちなみにAdobeのソフトにはUS（アメリカ英語）とInternational（その他の地域の英語）があるので、後者をインストールしているのですが、未だに何が違うのかがわかりません。（一見全てアメリカ英語）
ユーティリティ系のツールは、TextEvo、trim-pack、Ray Dynamic Color、Motion Tools、Quick Menu 他多々、頼りまくって…否、愛用させていただいています。
I use English for both OS and software language. The keyboard is US too.
As you can follow English tutorials more easily, and use the shortcuts designed by Adobe HQ, I recommend this setup,
I always choose International English as opposed to US English when I install Adobe software, but I still don’t know what the differences are. As far as I can tell, it’s all US English.
In terms of utility tools, I rely heavily on… I mean I use TextEvo, trim-pack, Ray Dynamic Color, Motion Tools and Quick Menu and so on with love.
これからAfter Effectsを始める人へ一言お願いします。
Do you have any words/advice for people who start using After Effects?
（なりたいタイプによっては、当てはまらないかもしれないという前置きを入れつつ）
After Effectsは機能が多岐にわたり、くまなく覚えるのは、茶碗のごはん粒をひとつひとつ数えるようなもので、途方もなく時間がかかる上につまらないので、おすすめしません。
そして、AEはあくまでもツールのひとつ。まずは何をやりたいかを決め、それを実現するにはどのような表現が最善なのかを意識し、やりたいことの軸がぶれないようにすること。そうすると、楽しみながら続けられますし、より良いアーティストになる近道になるはずです。
ソフトをきちんと学ぶことはもちろん大切ですが、それは嫌でも後からついてきます。もしくは、しばかれて叩き込まれます。
Of course, it depends on what kind of artist you want to be, and it might not apply to you. But After Effects has a wide range of features, and I don’t recommend learning every single feature, as it would take a painfully long time, and it will probably be boring.
After Effects is just another tool. You’ve got to decide what you want to do first and be mindful of what kind of direction is optimal for that, and be consistent. That way, you can enjoy what you do and keep at it. Then you should be well on the way to becoming a great artist.
Needless to say that it’s important to learn how to use tools, but that knowledge comes eventually whether you want it to or not. Or you have it drilled into you.
あなたにとってAfter Effectsとは？
What is After Effects to you?
「動くIllustrator」
ここ最近はIllustratorでスタイルフレーム（デザイン）を作り、それを動かすことが多いので、そのような立ち位置の使い方をしています。
昔は「動くPhotoshop」などとよく言われていたのですが、VFX作業のときなどは正にこちらが当てはまりますね。
I’d say it’s a moving Illustrator.
Recently, I often make style frames/designs using Illustrator and animate them. So that’s what After Effects is to me.
I remember it was often called ‘Moving Photoshop’ years ago, so if I did more VFX, that would have been the case.
