The US Virgin Islands is an island nation in the Caribbean. The largest and most famous islands are only four - Santa Cruz, Saint John, Thomas and Water. The remaining dozens of small islets and atolls are mostly uninhabited. The US Virgin Islands should not be confused with the British. Together they form the Virgin Islands, which in turn form the Lesser Antilles archipelago. The islands are owned by the United States. Officially, they have the status of an unincorporated organized territory. Almost a century ago, the United States bought these islands from Denmark.
